Markowitz Herbold - Gevurtz Menashe Wine Tasting and Auction Raises $90,000 for St. Andrew Legal Clinic
Portland, Ore -- Leaders in the legal and business communities came together on September 15, 2009, to enjoy fine wine and raised $90,000 for legal services for low-income families. The Markowitz Herbold – Gevurtz Menashe Taste for Justice Wine Auction, held at the University Club in Portland, benefited St. Andrew Legal Clinic, a 30 year-old non-profit law firm providing care to low-income families in Multnomah, Clackamas, Washington and Columbia Counties.
The evening’s festivities began with a champagne reception, then 88 guests savored world class wines paired with local and regional fare. “Celebrity” auctioneers Albert Menashe of Gevurtz, Menashe, Larson & Howe, PC; Matt Levin from Markowitz, Herbold, Glade & Mehlhaf, PC; Paul Fortino from Perkins Coie LLP; and Chris Hermann from Stoel Rives, LLP, auctioned off 31 spectacular wine lots, including a bottle of 1951 Chateau Margaux, a bottle of Mouton Rothschild, and magnum of Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon autographed by rock legend artist Sheryl Crow.
This year’s offerings also included non-wine lots, including the ever-popular “dinner for eight” at the home of Jay and Shelly Sickler, featuring culinary skills by Mark Hosack and wines from the private cellar of Paul Fortino, and a wine-themed piece of art donated by Thomas Arvid and the Shaffer Fine Art Gallery.
The fourth annual wine auction benefitting St. Andrew Legal Clinic (SALC) was co-hosted by preeminent Portland law firms Markowitz, Herbold, Glade & Mehlhaf, and Gevurtz, Menashe, Larson & Howe. Non-profit St. Andrew Legal Clinic serves clients who are primarily the working poor. More than 80 percent of SALC clients live below the Federal Poverty Guidelines, and many are victims of domestic violence. SALC bridges the gap for people who don’t qualify for free legal services and can’t afford legal representation elsewhere. As a result of the legal representation provided by SALC, children grow up in safer homes, parents experience increased financial security, and families stay off of welfare and become more productive members of society.
St. Andrew Legal Clinic is a community-based non-profit organization that provides quality legal services, in the area of family law, to low-income individuals and families who might otherwise not have access to them. The clinic has served over 40,000 people since opening its doors in 1979. For more information, go to
